On January 9, 2011 a small group of Jesus loving people met to talk about the possibility of forming a church. This meeting took place in the living room of a loving home. The initial meeting consisted of singing, a lesson from God’s Word and fellowship. It was like a cool drink of water to parched lips.
On January 16, 2011 twenty people gathered in the name of Jesus with singing, a lesson, fellowship, and then a vote to go forward with starting a church. On January 23, 2011 the name, theway church, was voted on by the congregation. |

Brother David Wilson's first Sunday preaching at theway church was February 20, 2011. Brother Scotty Brooke’s first Sunday was February 27th. Brother David Wilson was voted in as pastor and began leading the flock on June 1, 2011. Growth in theway church was pretty steady in the early stages and it became very apparent that space was a need.
God graciously provided space at Glenwood School. theway church began renting the new gym at Glenwood and held the first service there on July 3, 2011. As growth continued the need for a place to call home began to stir in the hearts of the people at theway church and so we began a journey. We were in search of a place that would be identified as theway church, a home for this body of Christ. As we searched, God was out before us preparing a beautiful home, and we touched down at the Homebuilders Association Building (HBA), located at 1808 Old Opelika Highway in Phenix City, Alabama. As theway church continued to grow our needs continued to expand. Just behind the HBA was a small church, First Christian Church (FCC), who were very loving and Kingdom minded people.
On September 12, 2012 they graciously and very inexpensively began renting their facilities to theway church. We initially rented their building for Wednesday Night service, but later expanded to Sunday mornings for classroom space. Additionally, they provided office space and study space for Brother David. As we moved forward, through the love of Jesus Christ, First Christian Church (FCC) voted on November 25, 2012 to transfer all property to theway church.
On December 14, 2012, the deed was recorded and the property located at 2101 18th Place officially became property of theway church, INC. We cannot thank the people of FCC enough for their love, kindness and Kingdom mindedness as they followed Jesus and extended a beautiful hand to their brothers and sisters in Christ.
On January 6, 2013, theway church, held its first Sunday service at 2101 18th Place, baptizing 16, preaching and teaching the Word of God and fellowshipping with a beautiful body of believers. As the church continued to grow we built a small building for our students and office space for the church pastor and secretary. Eventually the church grew to a size that the sanctuary would not handle the number of people, rather than go to multiple services we were led to return to the HBA for our Wednesday night and Sunday Morning Services. Our students moved their worship in the Sanctuary.
An agreement was reached with the HBA and services returned to the HBA where they remained until a group of members from Lamb Baptist Church contacted Brother David about their facilities.
Prayer and seeking the Lord through His Word began regarding theway church moving to the facilities located at 1593 Lee Road 242 in Smiths Station, Alabama. The members of Lamb Baptist Church voted June 14, 2015 unanimously to deed all property, facilities and furnishings back over to Jesus by way of theway church. On June 24, 2015 the members at theway church voted to accept the property, facilities and all furnishing from Lamb Baptist Church and officially move theway church to 1593 Lee Road 242 Smiths Station, AL. The first service was held on July 19, 2015.
On August 2, 2015 theway church voted to deed all properties located at 2101 18th place Phenix City, Alabama to Grace Freewill Baptist Church. What a beautiful blessing it was to be able to do for a body of Christ what has been done to us twice. Jesus has directed our paths through this entire process, and we will continue to seek, Him and continue to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. We are truly blessed to be able to do His work and we will be about His business.
