Hebrews 12:5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?                    “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
nor be weary when reproved by him.
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and chastises every son whom he receives.”

Today begins the week with having to do a little home work. Comment to turn in your homework.

1. Define discipline.
2. Define reprove.
3. Define chastise.

Now I want you to circle three to five additional words in this scripture that are critical to  understanding  the message. Explain why you circled each word, why do you find it important and a key to understanding the verse. Finally in your own words what does this scripture say to you?

Discipline- usually refers in the Bible to moral training which includes the positive aspect of instruction and the negative aspect of correction sometimes punitive. The result of receiving discipline with humility is wisdom and a satisfying successful life. In the OT the Word usually renders a form of the Hebrew yasar to instruct rebuke warm. Discipline in the NT usually renders a form of paideia to instruct correct.
Reprove-to scold or correct usually gently or with kindly intent. To express disapproval of.
Chastise- rebuke or reprimand severely. To scold someone severely for bad behavior or even punish someone by beating a person.
Exhortation- an urging done by someone close beside the Word most often translated “exhort” or “exhortation” comes from the Greek Word Paraklesis which means “to call to ones side to summon encourage admonish entreat” To exhort is to develop a relationship with other believers for the purpose of encouraging them in their Spiritual growth. The gift of exhortation is a persons unique ability to encourage and edify others. ALL Christians should desire to become better at exhortation to build up those who are weaker, encourage those who lead and strengthen the Body of Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:14;2 2 Corinthians 1:4
Weary-lacking strength energy or refreshness becauss of a need to rest or sleep.
This verse tells me to draw from the discipline of the Lord do not lose hope or feel defeated. God will build you into who He has called you to be. Because God sees us as His children He has to discipline us to get us on the right path and He does this because He loves us and only wants us to live the full lives He has given us.

Discipline- strenous cultivation of the righteous life.
Reprove - scold, correct, instruct.
Chastise - punish, correct.
Words that help me understand verse's meaning:. Loves, chastens, receives.
Verse means to me:. He wants me to know better, learn. If He shows me my mistakes because He loves me and wants better for me.

Discipline- to punish or penalize for the sake of enforcing obedience and perfecting moral character.

Reprove- rebuke, reprimand, admonish, reproach

Chastise- to inflict punishment on

Son, Lord, Loves, Receives are the words circled because you have to understand the relationship that is there and the love that is being expressed through this correction. It is the Love of our Lord that causes Him to punish and correct us, and if He didn't receive us in the first place then we aren't even sons and daughters to begin with.

It tells me that I can give praise and glory to God that He cares enough about my life that He's not going to allow me to go astray for any extended period of time, for His love causes Him to act in the form of punishment and discipline to get me back where I should be.
